CBSE Students Will Now Learn Lessons With The Help of Music, Dance And Arts

The schools which are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will soon have Art-Integrated learning methodologies. Recently there has been a rapid shift in the focus on learning techniques with more focus on learning outcomes. To attain the learning outcomes as listed by NCERT, there was a requirement to align learning methods and assessment process. CBSE has already introduced change in assessment and evaluation process which will be implemented from the upcoming academic year.
Art-Integrated learning is another very crucial and effective step in achieving the targets set by NCERT to get learning outcomes.
In the Circular of CBSE, it has cited NCF 2005 recommendations of integrating Arts with the curriculum. It states that art as a subject at all stages covering all four major spheres, namely music, dance, visual arts, and theatre. We all must bring the arts squarely into the curriculum domain, infusing them in all important areas of learning while giving them an identity of their own at relevant stages. The significance of the heritage crafts of India, both in terms of their economic and aesthetic values, should be recognized as being relevant to school education.
The board has kept these recommendations in mind and after discussion with various stakeholders, it has decided to introduce Art-Integrated learning in classrooms.
Advocating the integration of art forms in the process of learning, CBSE says, when Art is integrated with education, it surely helps the child apply art-based inquiry, investigation, and exploration, critical thinking and creativity. This is very effective for a deeper understanding of the concepts. In addition, Art Integrated learning is a strong contender for experiential learning, as it makes the students capable to derive meaning and understanding, directly from the learning experience.
Other aims which Art-integrated learning is expected to attain are the development of skills like communication skill, reflection and inquiry skills, appreciation for aesthetic and creativity, and also make students capable to identify 'multi-disciplinary links between subjects, topics, and real life'.
Art-Integrated learning is not a new concept for us. In the Harvard Education Letter, 2014 March/April edition, Suzzane Bouffard wrote an article on 'Using the Arts to Turn Schools Around'. She has been a writer and researcher at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for ten years. She cites in the article an example of a fifth-grade math class at Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School in Boston where students were taught multiplication table through Salsa.
