Craze for Engineering Gives Rise to ‘Education Malls’ in Ranchi

Education industry is a big and booming business. It is something that shall never fade, not even with time. In the present day every student wants to become an IITian. Each student is under so much pressure of performing excellently.

Some are self-pressurized whereas others are subjected to this pressure by their parents. Each parent wishes to see an IITian in their family. It has been seen that the craze for engineering is slightly fading in the metro cities now, but as far as the small cities are concerned, the number of crazy engineering aspirants have not come down. If seen practically only 1% of the aspirants make it to the IITs. In an interview with Kunal Jha, a 17 year old IIT aspirant, he stated that he wishes to be among those 0.9 % aspirants who crack IIT- JEE entrance. He wants to do it because it is his father’s dream. He himself is passionate for painting but has never paid heed to it as a profession. In order to meet the expectations of his father, he has joined “Shastri tutorials” in Ranchi. He has enrolled himself in the 4 year package programme wherein he will be made to brush up his skills for attempting the class 12th exam alongside JEE entrance. His daily schedules includes solving of never ending questionnaires, mind boggling quizzes and assignments. On the other hand, big cities have seen a major change. The students are now opting for alternative career options such as sports management, fashion merchandising, and social-media marketing. Despite this change, the coaching institutes are increasing in number day by day. A new trend of joining such a package programme almost 4 years before the actual year when the student shall be eligible for appearing in the exam has come up. This has indeed made the business even more intense. Alongside, it has also added more of pressure to the lives of the students. As per the latest statistics, the number of coaching institutes has seen an increase from 200 in 2012 to about 10,000 in the present year in Ranchi. In Nagpur, the number has risen from 110 in 2008 to 5,000. As per Jha, joining an IIT coaching early helps a student in many ways. He stated that four years prior to attempting the exam, a student gets to understand and live the life of an IITian.  It fills the student with immense confidence and zeal and seeing other students in a competitive mood, makes him also competitive. The coaching business is blooming at such rates due to the mentality of the parents also.  Parents often feel that school teaching is not sufficient for their ward. They believe that their child needs special attention and expert guidance. To parents, more hours spent in the coaching institute means better performance in the JEE entrance exam. Parents are ready to go to any extent, some even loan out their assets and send their children to these expensive coaching institutes. Ideally, the idea of taking guidance for JEE exam preparation is not bad but the children must understand and realise the importance of the hard earned money that their parents invest in such a coaching and should take as high advantage of these as is possible.
