The chapters on democracy and diversity in the social science program of Class 10 for the 2019-2020 session will not appear in the final examinations, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided.

Three chapters of Book I of Democratic Policy, namely "democracy and diversity", "people's struggle and movements" and "challenges to democracy", will not be evaluated in the 2020 board of directors' examination.

A circular published by CBSE says that these chapters will be "evaluated in the periodic tests, but will not be evaluated in the board exam".

The decision is believed to be part of a curricular streamlining exercise conducted by the human resources development ministry to reduce the "burden" of the curriculum for students

According to CBSE, the chapter "Challenges for democracy" includes "thinking about challenges", "political reforms" and "redefining democracy", while the chapter "popular struggles and movements" creates an understanding of the vital role of popular struggle in the expansion of democracy.

The chapter "democracy and diversity" analyzes the relationship between social divisions and political competition in relation to the situation in India.

No exam will lead to a relaxed attitude

A government teacher who requests anonymity because she is not authorized to speak with the media says: "CBSE has made these crucial chapters an optional way for students. These will be evaluated in the periodic tests, but the students know they will not be evaluated in the meetings, so they are not likely to study in depth. "

"Chapters such as" popular struggle "and" movements and challenges for democracy "have their own importance for the child to understand past struggles, and the child's knowledge of these issues must be evaluated holistically. is doing is not healthy and will have a long-term detrimental effect. "

Satvinderpal Kaul feels that all the chapters are interrelated in the social sciences and that the students' understanding of the chapters in question will be poor. The alteration in the curriculum is unexpected and random. "For the purpose of political socialization, the understanding of the democratic structure is minimal, without it, what is the value of social science?" He asks.

The regional director of CBSE and CBSE Delhi did not answer the questions.

Approving "the pruning of the syllabus", he says that there are four books for the social sciences examination of 80 marks.

"The textbooks of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) that students read today were carefully designed after the National Curriculum Framework, 2005. The book was designed in a way that promoted flexibility between teachers and students. The idea was to unlink the textbook from the exam and to promote student interest in the subject, "says Krishna Kumar, former president of NCERT.
