Festival of Gangaur and Its Importance

Gangaur festival is about Goddess Gauri or Parvati and celebrating love and marriage of Shiv and Parvati. Both married and unmarried women can take part in the festival. Goddess Parvati is the representation of deep affection, love, devotion and marital love. Gana means Lord Shiva and the festival of Gangaur is basically the celebration of Lord Shiva and Parvati together. Gauri won the heart of Lord Shiva after deep devotion and then, she visited her paternal home to celebrate Gangaur. The festival lasts for 18 days and most of the regions start with the festivities a day after Holi.
Gangaur is one of the most celebrated festivals of Rajasthan. The most impressive festivities occur in the cities of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Nathdwara, Udaipur and Bikaner. Married women worship Goddess Parvati for health and longevity of their husbands while unmarried women wish to get a good husband. The festival is celebrated by women who dress in their best of clothes and finest jewellery for 18 days. The final day is considered to be the most notable one with parades of women dressed colorfully to stroll on the streets of their villages and cities. They dance and celebrate the final day with a lot of enthusiasm.
In the city of Jaipur, the procession will start from Zanani-Deodhi near City Palace and goes through whole of old city places like ChotiChaupar, Tripolia Bazar, Gangauri Bazar and ends at the Talkatora. There are chariots, bullock carts, bands, elephants etc. that accompany the parade.
