Editorials News | May-26-2019
Google has come up with its free mobile app which is designed for helping young children learn to read. The app is designed by the company’s Area 120 incubator for employees’ big ideas. It comes with more than 2,000 books for kids which are categorized by different topics and reading levels. The app also listens to children read and assists with pronunciation when needed.
When this google android app listens your child read aloud, it encourages them with subtle visual cues; on mispronouncing a word, a button pops up for prompting them to hear the word pronounced correctly and to try again. On being ready, they can proceed further to read the rest of the page.
This is a very smart idea. From brief tests with a handful of supported books, the app is working surprisingly well. If you choose to make Rivet evaluate your reading by pressing the mic button, you’ll have to pronounce each word correctly and loudly to advance to the next page.
This feature is currently only available on a limited selection of books on the Android app which is the only caveat of it. Support is coming soon to iOS, and the company will likely add more audio-enabled books soon.
With its creative and attractive design, and progress gamification, this android app by google has the potential to help your kids develop a strong reading habit. However, it’s found that the range of books with audio support is rather lacking. The books which are based on YouTube videos are not in the picture. Hopefully, readers will have more to choose from on future.
The app is currently available in English, in 11 countries on Android and iOS, and it’s completely free to use. It now works well on most Android devices and provides more than 1,500 free books for kids to practice reading. The UI of Rivet is child-friendly and exempt from unnecessary or any extra buttons or menus. While reading, youngsters can easily swipe through pages and tap on any word to hear it out loud. Kids can even have its definition and practice pronunciation very intuitively. In addition, parents can track their kid’s progression with the help of the activity email updates and review the studying history in the settings of the app.
Rivet is a very engaging and superb way for teaching kids to read, but also to learn how to use a mobile app without messing with complicated menus and lists. As the software is still in beta, the creators are expecting to see more features and books added on releasing of the final version. In the meantime, this app remains a very usable and ingenious application which is recommended for your little loved ones.
