Government Seeks to Reform JEE Advanced Exam

Recently as per a proposal by the government, a five-member committee, headed by IIT-Madras director has been constituted in order to suggest changes to the JEE (Advanced) exam pattern. This step has been taken because this year an inadequate number of candidates could only qualify the entrance test.

The proposal panel consists of Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT-Kanpur, Vineet Joshi, director general of National Testing Agency, and Professor Kannan Moudgalya of IIT-Bombay. In the present year, the first merit list for JEE (Advanced) had only 18,138 candidates, which was only 1.6 times of the total seats. As a result the HRD Ministry came to the forefront at the last minute and ordered that a list of twice the number of seats in each discipline and category must be released as per merit before starting the choice filling through JoSAA. The motive of the government behind this proposal is to create a robust and scientifically designed entrance exam system to test the potential of the candidates as well as to reduce their dependence on coaching institutes. The proposal shall be discussed by IIT Council also on August 21, wherein the suggestion of allocating the Engineering branch to the student in second year shall also be discussed. The basis of allocation of the branch shall be the student’s performance in the first year of the college. This suggestion has been made by one of the 23 premier engineering schools. It shall surely reduce the pressure on the ranks in the JEE exam and shall also make sure that the students take the first year of their engineering course seriously.
