Moral and ethical values refer to the distinctions in the intentions shown, decisions made as well as the actions carried out by an individual irrespective of the aspects which are right or wrong, proper or improper. In analyzing the moral values of an individual, it requires patience and keen eyes in order to establish the authenticity of what morals people try to show. Some people will often sham to have moral values so that they gain undeserved favors and privileges. This is not sincere!
Madurai: Highlighting instances like the Pollachi sexual abuse case, murders due to illicit affairs, abuse of students by the teachers and similar other incidents taking place across the state, the Madurai bench of the Madras high court has lamented the lack of moral foundation in the society. As such, they have appealed the central and state governments whether they can include moral science in the syllabus of schools and colleges in order to inculcate ethical and moral values in the students.
A division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S S Sundar was hearing a petition from an advocate, O Homerlal who sought to make NCC, Scouts and moral classes compulsory in all the schools and colleges in the state.
Observing that there is a fundamental problem with the education system in the country which focuses only on the academic excellence, the bench questioned the governments why extra-curricular activities such as National Cadet Corps, Scouts etc. have not been made compulsory in all the schools and colleges. The judges then impleaded the CBSE chairperson and secretary of the human resource development department in the case.
“Moral education to all students is the need of the hour. However, sadly academic excellence is strongly focused on, today, ignoring the physical education as well as the moral aspects,” the court said and stated that because of non-inclusion of moral education in school and college syllabus, the country is witnessing heinous crimes, even committed by the children.
The court held that lack of morality is the basic reason for many crimes including unrest in the country and it is imperative that moral education is imparted on the students. Further hearing on the case is adjourned to April 11 2019.
