History of Kaleidoscope And David Brewster

David Brewster was the man behind the invention of kaleidoscope in 1816. His creation was developed when he was studying various aspects of physical sciences like polarisation optics and the properties of light. One fine day when he was working, he looked at a few objects at the end of 2 mirrors and observed patterns and colors that were created and reformed into alluring new arrangements. He named his invention using Greek words: kalos meaning beautiful, eodos meaning shape and scopeo meaning to look at; which all together combined to mean beautiful form watcher.

He patented his idea in 1817 but due to some word mistake in his patent, other were easily able to copy his idea without much being done by a legal action. However, Brewster never saw his invention as a way to achieve financial success even when other inventors were aggressive in mass producing his majestic invention. Sir David Brewster was also known for his other notable work like light and optical advances including a lens design for lighthouses and advances in stereoscope designs.

Kaleidoscopes were heavily used as a polar diversion during Victorian age. In 1870s, Charles Bush was known as a very famous US kaleidoscope maker due to his development of parlor kaleidoscope. He patented the idea in 1873 and even now, collectors are not able find this particular kind of kaleidoscope. These kaleidoscopes were a rare 4 footed version with a round base.

Several baby boomers do recall getting a toy kaleidoscope when they were a kid. During 1970s, a renaissance in kaleidoscope artistry began and in 1980, one of the very first exhibition for kaleidoscope was held. This exhibition helped in growing the interest in kaleidoscopes as a form of art. Now, we can find several skilled kaleidoscope artists and kaleidoscope makers.
