NCERT Will Train Teachers Using Online Courses

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recently collaborated with Curtin University, Australia to develop and execute online training modules for Indian teachers. This will help in simplifying dissemination of new courses to teachers that work in rural or interior belt of the education system. The scheme is going to cover over 87 lakh teachers through their massive open online courses (MOOCs) and webinars.

According to National Achievement Survey, Class III report, average score for 12 states in maths and 15 states in languages looks unsatisfactory. A similar survey done for Class 8th is equally disappointing. This led to NCERT taking steps to boost teacher's ability. PK Mandal, Head of International Divisions at NCERT said that activity learning has not been implemented in several states even after National Curriculum Framework was introduced in 2005. This could be one of the reasons why quality teaching looks dismal and the organisation needs to take it as a priority immediately. Anna Parkin, Dean, International and Strategic Partnerships at Curtin University said that teaching quality plays a big role in student output and productivity and poor learning can lead to weak skills. Curtin University is ranked in top 100 universities in QS rankings plus they have understood the teaching gaps in our diverse country by their involvement with NCERT for over two years. They have already started developing online curriculum as per the needs of each state.
