NEET 2019 – Eligibility Criteria

MBBS is one of the toughest courses to get admission into. Every year lacs of students make an attempt to get through this exam but not many get successful at it. The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted for granting admissions to undergraduate medical courses. On 1 November 2018, the registration for the NEET exam this year has commenced. This exam is held to grant admission to MBBS/ BDS courses in Indian colleges. These colleges are running as per the approval of the Medical Council of India/ Dental Council of India. The NEET exam came into picture in the year 2016. Since then it has seen a number of changes. In the year 2017 restrictions related to age and attempt limit WERE put forth by CBSE. The students and their parents got very angry with this and resultantly came up several petitions and litigations in this matter because of which the CBSE board had to change its decision. In the present year as such no changes have come out. The NEET 2019: Eligibility criteria is as follows:
1. Age limit: The minimum age for being able to attempt the NEET exam is 17 years. The maximum age limit is 25 years. For the reserved category students around five years relaxation has been provided. Last year the government had introduced the age limit which saw a lot of protest and anger from the students, parents and teachers. Resultantly the apex court allowed the students of above 25 years also to appear for the exam.
2. No. of Attempts - One can attempt the NEET exam three times in total.
3. Open School Students - Those who have studied through open school can also apply for this exam but their candidature is subject to the decision of the court. This matter is already before the High Court of Delhi, High Court of Allahabad, Lucknow bench and High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur.
4. One needs to have passed class 12th or should have been appearing for class 12th at the time of application. The necessary subject that one should have studied are physics, chemistry, biology/ biotechnology along with practical tests in the subject along with one elective subject in which English is compulsory. One should have scored at least 50% marks in class 12th exams. The reserved category candidates have been given relaxation here also. They should have scored at least 40% marks.
Or
Students who have passed the pre-professional/ pre-medical examination with PCB/Biotechnology and English in the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination. The pre-professional/pre-medical exams include practical tests in these subjects and English as a compulsory subject.
Or
Those who have passed the first year of the three years’ degree course of a recognised University with PCB/Biotechnology.
Or
Students who have passed the B.Sc. examination from a recognised Indian University. He/ she should have passed the programme with not less than two of the subjects PCB (Botany, Zoology)/Bio-technology. They should have passed the earlier qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
