Nishchay Luthra Struggles To Represent India at Olympics

Nishchay Luthra was born on 9th March 1999 in New Delhi India and is an Indian figure skater. His mother is a government servant and his younger sister is finishing her studies. Studying at The Indian School in New Delhi, Nishchay played basketball, taekwondo, and cricket, and was also a state level athlete. After that, he starts focusing on figure skating and competes in Men’s singles and pairs. He has won 4 international medals for India and is a 9-time Indian national gold medalist. From an early age of 10, he started as a roller speed skater. His mother realized his potential during his childhood days and found Vasudev Tandi while searching for skating coaching classes. Tandi taught Nishchay the basic moves and helped him graduate in ice-skating.

Nishchay in 2011 won Gold in his maiden National Ice Skating Championship which was held in Shimla. He attended the National Ice Skating Camp again in 2012. He competed in singles and pairs event, winning Gold in both. He started his practice in iSkate which is an indoor ice skating rink in Gurgaon. Nishchay won 2 Silver medals in 2013 at the National Ice Skating Championship in singles and pairs events. He also won 2 Gold medals in 2014 in singles and pairs.

In Manilla Philippines, Nishchay represented India at the World Development Trophy 2014. He won a bronze medal for the nation. In the year 2015, owing to the lack of training infrastructure, Nishchay shifted to the United States for 6 months of rigorous training. He came back to India in 2015 because of the lack of funds. In 2016, he won 2 gold medals in the National Ice Skating Championship.

In 2018, he continues his training in the USA with the focus of qualifying for Winter Olympics. Nishchay was also a contestant of India’s Got Talent Season 7. Adidas has taken the responsibility of telling his struggle story who is training in Florida for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics.

The ad film of Adidas which goes by the hashtag, '#FanTheFire', is a part of the Adidas initiative for focussing attention on athletes who pursue lesser followed sports. This advertisement begins with a voice-over (VO) by the mother of Nishchay Luthra. In this, as she narrates the story of her son's journey in pursuit of his dreams. Throughout the VO, we are bombarded with lessons on the determination, hard work, and grit.
