Pollution Level Destroys Ecology In Nullah
Editorials News | Jun-05-2018
The level of pollution in Buddha Nullah is threatening the ecology in a hazardous way because it is not only destroying the ecology but also the biodiversity and health of people. The study carried out by a Sri Lankan student named Ravindra Gunavardana, student of Desh Bhagat University says the dangerous condition of nullah water is a threat to its catchment area and beyond.
The study was based on the comparison of pollution in Buddha Nullah and Kelani river of Sri Lanka. Ravindra found the presence of heavy metals in the river of Nullah like arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead and thallium whereas the amount of arsenic was double the amount of limit at Walligpur Kalan and cadmium was also present above the permissible limit. This is resulting in major health problems, including demolition of biodiversity. Other things like pH level, Electrical conductivity were also higher than the permissible limit which is very harmful for living organisms. Nullah water failed miserably in the content of Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) which results in low oxygen supply in water. Total dissolved solids (TDS), Total solid (TS), total suspended solid (TSS) were also above the level of permission. This will end in making the life miserable of water bodies through which they have no fish in Nullah. The major reason of pollution is said to be the industries as there are around 1100 industries in Ludhiana which release domestic waste and solid waste that is increasing the pollution level.
