Real Reasons Why Titanic Sank
Editorials News | Aug-24-2018
Titanic was the largest and most luxurious cruise liner in the history of the world. It was considered unsinkable and yet on its maiden voyage, it sank. April 14, 1912 is marked as one of the worst historical disasters ever. There is still debate on why it sank and here are some of the reasons historians and researchers have come up with.
The wireless radio operator dismissed a crucial iceberg warning: Less than an hour before another ship was stopped because of dense ice in the ocean. But the crew on Titanic considered it to non-urgent.
It may have taken a fatal wrong turn: Due to sudden orders for turning the ship, crewmember might have turned the ship into the direction of the ice rather than away from it.
Weather conditions caused mirages and hazy horizons: Two studies were done on 100th anniversary of Titanic. One showed that the position of sun and moon was such that it increased the number of tides in the sea and resulted in more floating ice. The other showed that atmospheric conditions caused super refraction which caused mirages and made it difficult to see iceberg clearly.
Lookouts had no binoculars: There were no binoculars with the lookouts. Thy could have helped spot the iceberg much earlier to prevent the ship from hitting it.
The boat did not have enough lifeboats: The boat left from the horizon with only 20 lifeboats with 1178 people aboard.
