Students are Preferring Non Clinical Courses over Clinical Ones – NEET Results

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG is an entrance examination in India, for students who wish to study graduate medical course and dental course in government or private medical colleges and dental colleges respectively in India. Recently a statement was made by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stating that majority of students are choosing non-clinical courses in medical and dental colleges.

He gave this statement during a conference on the “Role of biomedical scientists in New India”. The conference was conducted by the National M.Sc. Teachers’ Association (NMMTA). As per the claims of the NMMTA, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has reduced the non-medical faculty in Medical colleges to 15-25 per cent and the MCI plans to subsequently stop hiring them. Non-medical teachers are those having medical M.Sc. degree/PhD in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and biochemistry from MCI-recognised colleges. This proposal of MCI shall reduce the job opportunities for the non-medical faculties largely. Resultantly, NMMTA is protesting against this proposal of the MCI. Mr. Pant stated that earlier students were not very keen about such subjects but lately there has been an increasing demand for admissions for studying subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and paramedical subjects like microbiology. The NEET results have proved this aspect very well. The Health Ministry promised that the government will try its best in reducing this injustice and shall make best of efforts to regulate these courses through a proper framework of rules and regulations.
