
The Ray of Filmmaking in India

Satyajit Ray was one of the phenomenal Indian filmmakers and authors who received a lot of recognition for his work in the 20th century. The legend was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali Brahmo family who were prominent in the arts and literature field.
Satyajit Ray started his career as a commercial artist. After his meeting with French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica’s Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a short visit to London, Satyajit Ray entered independent filmmaking. The visionary person directed 36 films that included feature films, documentaries and shorts. Ray was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic. The talent of Ray extended into being an author of several short stories and novels that aimed at children and adolescents.
Satyajit Ray was awarded with an honorary degree by Oxford University. The very first film of Ray, Pather Panchali won eleven international prizes.
