Independent Gems of Hindi Cinema

Over the last few years, Indian audiences have moved towards consuming international media and foreign consumers have moved their gaze towards Hindi cinema. They are often mesmerized by the colorful color palette, amazing songs, and gorgeous actors and actresses but are left in surprise with storylines they have never experienced before.
With the wide variety of media at our disposal, at the touch of a button, Indian viewers often overlook some of the gems Indian independent artists have produced. Here is a list of a few films that might help reignite your love for Hindi cinema
1. Stanley ka Dabba
This 2011 release stars Divya Dutta, Partho Gupte, Divya Jagdale, Raj Zutshi, and Amole Gupte, who has also written, directed, and produced it as well.
The story revolves around Stanley a fourth-grader with a secret and creative imagination. He and his friends love going to school but not the recess for many teachers who insist on sharing their tiffin. Life takes another turn when the Hindi teacher forces everyone to bring his dabba or stop coming to school. Will Stanley stand up to the bully?
2. Do Dooni Chaar
A family-centric comedy-drama produced by Planman Motion Pictures, written and directed by debutant director Habib Faisal, and starring Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Aditi Vasudev, and Archit Krishna in lead roles.
This film is about a middle-class school teacher trying to keep up with his family’s aspiration to improve their standard of living in a time of inflation and their dream of owning a car one day.
3. The Blue Umbrella
It is a 2005 drama film based on the Ruskin Bond novel of the same name, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, starring Shreya Sharma and Pankaj Kapoor.
The movie is set in the picturesque Himachal Pradesh, where a young village girl is given a blue umbrella by a Japanese tourist and the greed of a village shopkeeper to attain the said umbrella.
4. Udaan
This 2010 release is a story about a 16-year-old aspiring poet/writer, who gets expelled from a boarding school and is sent home to his furious widowed father, who had abandoned him for 8 years. He is instructed to work for his family business while attending college. It is an important film depicting a relationship between an estranged father and his son while also being about the son finding himself.
