We all must have heard about the word STEM, but have we ever thought of what it is?
Let me explain first, what is STEM?
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.
It is primarily based on the objective of educating students in the above-mentioned disciplines. It enhances critical thinking and innovative ability.
Now let us see why STEM Education is important in today’s world.
STEM is a topic that will brighten our future if we understand everything in it. It will play a major role in our lifestyle, as it will have a lot of scope in the coming years.
There is more to this topic than changing our lifestyle and giving us knowledge. It engages and equips us with critical thinking, problem-solving, creative and collaborative skills, and ultimately establishes connections between school, workspace, and global economy.
STEM Education is a relatively new term in INDIAN Education. India also has a large number of Scientists and Engineers. There is a huge demand for the topic. Many companies are tying up with schools and helping them build classrooms like tinkering labs and making them more fun to learn by using upcoming technologies like Virtual-Reality and Augmented- Reality.
Over the last few years, STEM Education has become a part of Indian Education. The earlier mentioned four disciplines of STEM are taught in the following methods in most of the schools today.
Atal Tinkering Laboratory (ATL - Science)
ATL is an approach by the Central Government of India, to create an environment of scientific temperate, innovation, and creativity among students. ATL lab would teach students essential 21st-century skills, which will help them in developing their professional and personal skills.
Robotics (Technology)
In Robotics, the ability to code and build is taught. In simple words, we should know which part should go where and coding plays an important role here. But, nothing is impossible if we have the will to understand it.
Aerospace modeling (Engineering)
In this field, as the name suggests, the emphasis is on the development of Aircraft. But for starters, it is not too advanced. Engineering classes might include topics like civil engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.
Mathematics (Mathematics)
Mathematics also plays an important part in STEM Education. There is more to it than the normal maths. STEM Maths is more advanced and is used for the other mediums of STEM.
American Mathematician Katherine Johnson’s once said:
“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be Science, Engineering, and Technology. And there will always, always be Mathematics.”
Hence it is important to hone our skills in STEM and become innovative, irrespective of the career we choose.
