The Effects Of Television Violence On Children’s Behavior
Education News | Jul-04-2023
Modern civilization cannot function without television, and its impact on kids cannot be understated. Violence is one component of television material that has drawn criticism. There have been discussions regarding the possible impact of violent content on children's behavior due to the prominence of violent scenes in television shows, including cartoons, action shows, and movies.
This article explores the effects of violent television on children's behavior and offers insights into related studies.
1. Desensitization to Violence:
Regular exposure to violent television programming might make kids less sensitive to hostility and violence in real life. According to studies, youngsters who often watch violent television shows may lose their sensitivity to the negative effects of aggressive behavior, causing the boundary between fictitious violence and actual acts to become hazier.
2. Aggressive Behavior Modeling:
Television violence can act as a behavioral role model for youngsters, modeling aggressive behavior. Children frequently copy the behaviors and activities they witness on television and other media, including aggressive behavior. They may be more inclined to act violently in their own lives if they see aggressive personalities acting that way without suffering any serious repercussions.
3. Increased Aggressiveness & Hostility:
According to research, children's aggressiveness is positively correlated with their exposure to violence on television. Children are more prone to respond aggressively while interacting with others when they are exposed to more violence on television. Peer relationships and social interactions may be harmed by this hostility, which can take both physical and verbal forms.
4. Dread & Anxiety:
Children who watch violent television shows may experience dread and anxiety. Young viewers who see violent pictures could experience increased feelings of uncertainty and anxiety about threats in the actual world. This anxiety may affect their general mental health and exacerbate symptoms of stress.
5. Distorted Perceptions of Reality:
Children who are exposed to violent content on television may acquire warped conceptions of reality. They could think the world is more hostile and perilous than it is, which would make them feel more exposed and vulnerable. They may interpret the world differently as a result of this erroneous vision, which may also alter how they make decisions.
6. Reduced Prosocial Behaviour:
Children's prosocial behavior, such as empathy, sharing, and collaboration, can be reduced by violent television. Children may internalize and prioritize individualistic and aggressive impulses above prosocial behaviors when exposed to aggressive behavior on television, perhaps resulting in a drop in good social interactions.
Conclusion: There is a continuous study into how violent television programming affects children's behavior. Even while it's important to recognize that other factors than television affect children's behavior, the data points to the possibility that exposure to violent material may have unfavorable effects. The possible effects should be considered by parents, educators, and legislators who should work to limit children's media use, advance media literacy, and encourage the choice of age-appropriate and non-violent programs. Further investigation is required to better understand the complicated link between television violence and children's behavior as well as to investigate practical mitigation strategies.
