English: The Universal Language

Mistakes have the power to make you feel afraid to use your English. Mistakes can also make you feel embarrassed when someone corrects you. They show your failure to know the basic rules of English… right?

But it’s wrong!

The aim of learning English is just to communicate, and the fact is that mistakes actually do not damage communication. For example:

If one says “It depends of the money” instead of “It depends on the money,” everyone will still understand him (and many won’t even notice that small error).

Sometimes one makes a bigger fallacy that causes a problem in communication. Still this is normal since it’s a part of learning a language. One just needs to try to clarify the issue using some other words. He must think of a different and simpler way to say what he wants to say.

For example if one says “my owner was talking about the construction project”, but he wanted to tell that the owner of his house was asking for a quote/budget (an estimate of how much the construction would actually cost). Nevertheless, he did not know the words “budget,” “estimate” or “quote.” Instead, he should have said that the owner of his house wants to know about how much the work will cost” it’s just an easier way to communicate the same message.

Just remember that one should choose to see mistakes and learn but not as a disaster since making mistakes doesn’t mean that the person is stupid.

One should focus on visualizing the end goal and must know that every second of time he invests is bringing him closer to the goal

Trying some simple exercises can help one a lot like when he sits down to study English, he should spend a couple minutes imagining reaching his goal. He should imagine himself speaking English effortlessly without translating in his head and Imagine himself confidently giving any business presentation in English. Imagine him reading a book in English as well as understanding all the vocabulary, which would probably feel great!

Then he must tell himself that every study session is bringing him closer to that situation. This makes studying more enjoyable and meaningful, as he knows that what he is doing is useful and that he is making real progress.
