Study Says That Eating Dark Chocolate Can Reduce Stress and Boost Memory

Experimental trials have shown that consuming dark chocolate can reduce inflammation and stress and also improve memory, mood and immunity. The reason being high concentration of cacao, which is a major source of flavonoids. These flavonoids are potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. They are known to be beneficial for cardiovascular health and brain. Lead investigator of the study Lee S.Berk said that they have looked at the effects of dark chocolate from standpoint of sugar content and now, this is the first time they have taken into account the large amounts of cacao.

Dark chocolate was also found to influence the human gene expression. It was shown to regulate neural signalling, sensory application and cellular immune response. The consumption of cacao up-regulated multiple intracellular signalling pathways that involve T-cell activation, genes involved in neural signalling and sensory perception and cellular immune response. The study proves that higher the concentration of cacao, there is a more positive influence of mood, memory, cognition, immunity and other beneficial effects. The results of the study were presented at the Experimental Biology 2018 meeting in US city of San Diego. The trial comprised the team analysing the influence of large amounts of cacao in doses that was around the same quantity as regular sized chocolate in humans over short and long periods of time. Further investigation is needed to determine the significance of these effects.
