Brijmohan Mishra who is popular everywhere as Pandit Birju Maharaj is the leading proponent of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Kathak dance in India. This great Kathak dancer is a descendant of the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers. It includes his two uncles who are Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj.
The first love of Pt. Birju Maharaj is dancing but he also has an excellent command over Indian Classical Music. He is also an accomplished vocalist. The legendary Birju Maharaj took Kathak to new heights by choreographing new Kathak dance dramas. People are stunned by his performances all across the globe. He has given thousands of performances and also held hundreds of workshops for kathak students.
Birju Maharaj’s father, Acchan Maharaj of Lucknow Gharana served as the court dancer in Raigarh princely state. Birju Maharaj began his teaching career of this dance form at a very young age of thirteen at the Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi. He won Padma Vibhushan in 1986.
