Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, in Sports and Games, is the highest donning honor of the Republic of India. The honor is named after Rajiv Gandhi, previous Prime Minister of India who served the workplace from 1984 to 1989. It is given yearly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The recipient(s) is/are chosen by a board established by the Ministry and are respected for their astounding and most exceptional execution in the field of sports over a time of four years at the global level. Starting in 2020, the honor contains an emblem, a testament, and a monetary reward of ₹25 lakhs.

Initiated in 1991–1992, the honor was given for the exhibition by a sportsperson in a year. In light of the ideas given by the 2014 honor determination board of trustees, the Ministry modified the rules in February 2015 to think about the presentation over a time of four years. The assignments for a given year are acknowledged till 30 April or the last working day of April with not more than two sportspersons designated for each sports discipline.

A twelve-part panel assesses the exhibitions of a sportsperson at different International occasions like Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. The board later presents its proposals to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for additional endorsement.

The principal beneficiary of the honor was Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who was respected for the presentation in the year 1991–92.
Normally presented upon only one sportsperson in a year, a couple of special cases have been made (1993–1994, 2002, 2009, 2012, and 2016–2020) when various beneficiaries were granted in a year.

Starting in 2019, there have been 43 beneficiaries from fifteen game disciplines: Athletics, Badminton, Billiards, Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Field hockey, Gymnastics, Shooting, Snooker, Table Tennis, Tennis, Wrestling, Weightlifting, and Yacht hustling. This year's beneficiaries of the honor are Rohit Sharma (Cricket), Mariyappan Thangavelu (Para-Athletics), Manika Batra (Table Tennis), Vinesh Phogat (Wrestling), and Rani Rampal (Hockey).
