Media is a very important component of our lives these days, sometimes we don’t even notice or realize this. Ranging from that daily social media scroll to newspapers and magazines; everything is media! In simple language, it is a means of mass communication, the communication channels through which data transmission takes place. Some major types of media are Print Media, Broadcast Media, Outdoor Media, and The Internet.
Print Media: As the name suggests, print media is generally in hardcopy form. Common examples include newspapers and magazines which provide us with a lot of information on a daily basis and that too at a very cheap price.
Broadcast Media: As the name suggests, broadcast media is generally aired. Common examples include televisions and radios. This type of media is a little expensive as compared to print media.
Outdoor Media: Billboards, signs, cinema and video advertisements, boardings, and electronic messages come under outdoor media. Outdoor media reaches a lot of people at the same time but also gets criticized.
The Internet: The thing we’re dependent upon currently. Ad videos and banners, pop-ups, sponsorships, and virtual services can be a few examples. Its cost is high and it lacks mass media efficiency still is widely used because of its interactive nature.
Now, why do so many types of media exist? What is the role of media these days, in today’s world?
So many types of media exist so that they can reach people of different types and preferences. In today’s world, media is one of the most important components. It is responsible for shaping our minds regarding different things. For example, we come to know about different political parties through media. What we think about them, their image in our mind, the party we vote for, everything is dependent upon media. Also, ever wondered why the same ads are shown over and over again? It is because subconsciously we notice it, even if we don’t pay attention to it. The benefits of buying it and the discounts being offered when told repeatedly make us want to buy it most of the time. Thus, we can say that media indirectly plays a vital role in almost everything; ranging from stuff we buy to the leaders we choose.
