Tennis is one of the most famous sports worldwide and about 8.17 million that is about 1.17% of the world’s population watch and follow. India, China, and the US combined account the 50% of the global tennis population. In the world, many people adopt tennis as their profession. But in India tennis is mobilizing gradually. The prominent reason for mobilizing and this in India gradually is due to famous sports personality of tennis from India. The discussion is incomplete without the involvement of one of the greatest Indian tennis players Leander Paes.
Lender Paes is an Indian tennis player and he is one of the best doubles and mixed doubles players in the world. The story of Lander Paes begins on the day 17th June 1973, Kolkata, India. His father’s name is Mr. Vece Paes and he was a professional hockey player mother’s name was Mrs. Jennifer Paes and she was a player in the Indian woman basketball team. He studied at LA Marinere Calcutta, Madras Christian college higher secondary school at ST. Xavier college. At the age of five, he started playing tennis and get all the basic information about the game. In the year 1985, he started his practice at Madras tennis Academy. He also won the 1990 Wimbledon Junior Player in the world. Paes joins the Indian Davis Cup in 1990 and turned professional in 1990. In the year 1996 when he took the men’s single tennis bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympics Games, he became the first Indian athlete since 1952 to win an individual medal in Olympics. He competed in consecutive Olympics from 1992 to nine in 2016 making him the first Indian and only tennis player to compete at 7 Olympic Games. He won four Grand Slam mixed doubles. Paes won five gold medals and two bronze medals in 1996 from Olympic Games. And after all these achievements he was also awarded national awards which include: In the year 1990 he was honored with Arjuna Award. In the year 1996-97 he was honored with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. In the year 2001, he was honored with Padma Shree and in January 2014 he was honored with the Padma Bhushan.
