Types Of String Instruments

A string instrument is a musical instrument which when strung on the strings with the vibration it produces sound. The strings are plucked by fingers or a device called a plectrum or pick to produce sound. Each string in the instrument has a different frequency.
There are more than 300 different string instruments present worldwide.

The basic types of string instruments are -

1. HARP -

It is a string instrument that has a resonator/belly which is perpendicular to the plane of the strings. Each string produces one note from low to high note when strung. Harp can be widely seen played in the ancient Mediterranean and the Middle East.

2. CELLO -

It is also called violoncello. The instrument comes in the Violin group. It has 4 strings pitched from C G D A upwards. The Cello is almost 27.5 inches long and 47 inches wide with its neck, it has comparatively deeper ribs and a shorter neck than the Violin. The cellos were made during the 16th century with 5 strings. Later the Cello was replaced by Violin by the 17th and 18th centuries.

3. GUITAR -

The guitar is a fretted instrument, it usually has 6 strings which when strung by fingers or plectrum/ pick to produce sound. Guitar has a body, bridge, neck, fretboard, and head. There are 3 types of modern guitar: The classical guitar, they are usually made up of nylon strings, The steel-string guitar, and The Hawaiian guitar.

4. STRING BASS GUITAR -

They are usually low pitched instruments, it is plucked like the same with other guitars to produce sound.
It has 4 to 6 strings and a long neck with a scale length. It was first developed in the 1930s. The strings are tuned in E A D G. To be heard in normal performance, musicians use external amplifiers.

5. VIOLA -

It is also plucked or strung to produce sound. It is comparatively larger than a Violin and also has a deeper and lower sound. It comes from the Violin family. The Italian name for Viola is "Abruzzo". It was most popular in the 18th century.

6. VIOLIN -

It is an instrument with a treble pitch. The classical Violin was developed in the 16th century. It usually has 4 strings with a rounded body, narrowed in the middle, and two sound holes

7. UKULELE -

It is a small guitar-like instrument. It is a member of the lute family; it usually has 4 nylon strings. It originated in Hawaii in the 1900s. To produce a sound it is plucked by thumb or fingertips just like other string instruments. Ukulele is tuned differently from the guitar. It tends to be easier to play than guitar because of its small size.
