The fish belongs to Tosanoides genus and was discovered in June 2016 at the world’s northern most coral islands during the research trip to Kure. According to the researchers the island is made of huge coral reefs.
The researchers have referred the Papahanaumokuakea Marin National Monument as home to millions of sea creatures such as seabirds, endangered turtles, endangered monk seals, and many more.
The site is home for 7,000 species including this newly found Obama-fish. It was discovered in June this year during a research trip to Kure, the world's northernmost atoll. This fish is found only in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a World Heritage site encompassing 1,510,000 square kilometers of ocean waters, having ten islands and tolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

A male specimen was taken for further analysis. The female specimen was collected a few days later from the male by Bishop Museum at an atoll about 249 kilometers from Kure.
