VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE LEARNING

The virtual and augmented reality technology is designed and used specifically for education contexts. It helps teachers to create three-dimensional individual and interactive environments for their students. Study shows that this has enhanced the learning and understanding levels of students in many ways.

Students feel free to experiment in activities like role-playing as this technology reduces anxiety and embarrassment. It also allows them to revisit and repeat lessons several times to help them understand better. It encourages students to interact better as they could react and share in a virtual world, instead of communicating through email.

Since it puts students in control of their avatar, rather than the teacher, they explore, understand and interact independently. The increasingly advanced virtual worlds allow their avatars to move and respond realistically. This aids students to make meaningful conversations via facial expressions, gestures and body language.

However, some challenges are posed by this technology. These include poor response times, incompatible environmental settings, and incompatible software. Currently, this educational technology’s potential is beginning to be realized in secondary and tertiary schools. The release of relatively low cost equipments is making this technology a wider choice in the near future.
