Collaborative Learning Fostered by Peer Tutoring

Cross-age tutoring is a teaching technique that has the potential to enhance the learning process and, therefore, enhance the achievement levels of the students involved. Peer tutoring is effective because it involves grouping students that have diversified skills, this makes the students to be more involved and forced to think critically. The information is delivered individually to a tutee by a tutor, who is usually a student who has already passed through the material in question.

In a peer tutoring system, the students learn the important aspects of inter and intrapersonal communication, understanding, and leadership skills. The tutor gets to know how to explain the matters at hand, while the tutee gets to gain another perspective about the matters at hand. It makes learning more engaging because teachers and learners work together in an environment that encourages the asking of questions and active learning.

Another advantage of peer tutoring is that treats fosters a sense of unity among learners due to the fact that they work for the common good. Thus, knowledge and experiences are transferred, as well as good relationships are created, and a network of students is formed who can support each other.

The use of peer tutoring in educational contexts helps the educators to foster a spirit of teamwork that is of advantage to both the tutor and the tutee. These approaches have the possibility of changing the face of learning as perceived by students and resulting in better performance, a high level of participation, and a compassionate student fraternity.
