Is Technology Separating Us?

Since the turn of the century, our technology has advanced rapidly. We have seen promising results in fields like Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, as well as new digital platforms, have come up for purposes of entertainment, education, etc. Everything has some good as well as bad effects on us, and so does technology. Although it has led to increasing human capabilities, some argue that it has separated us from each other. It is this question that we shall try to explore in this article.

Technology has distanced us from our surroundings. People would rather be on their digital devices than spend some time with their family and friends. Ironically, the social animal, a man now would rather look at a bright screen every day than socialize in person with others. If we do not socialize together with others, we would not have anyone to share our joys and sorrows with, to be there to help in times of trouble, etc. It is well said united we stand, divided we fall.

We should also consider that during these times, when the coronavirus pandemic has made us bound to our homes, it is this technology that has helped us connect with others. People are using social media and video calling to connect with their friends and family. If we were not able to maintain contact with them, it would have been hard to stay positive in such dark times. It is due to technology only that you are able to read this article.

The decision whether technology is a boon or a bane, whether it has joined or separated us is solely yours. According to me, it has both separated and joined us, depending on its use. Therefore, it is my humble request to you all to not be servants of our own creation and learn to use the technology we have in a better way.
