Milestones in Gender Equality: Progress in Women's Rights Globally

It has been a never-ending struggle to establish gender equality in the past; it has been a success story and a failure. We have seen people rising and we also have seen them being brought down, we have also seen the chronicles of their fights and their persistence. From suffragettes in the streets shouting for the right to vote to contemporary activists clamoring for equal pay and representation just to mention a few, the road toward gender equality has experienced memorable moments over the last century that have given impetus to the attainment of a more equitable society, especially for women and other people facing similar transcendental challenges. When we look back on progress, even though there is a long way to go till we reach complete equality, by giving due to recognizing the contribution of the past generation, we can celebrate our achievement and keep on marching towards a more just world.

1. Suffrage Movement:
Suffragettes were the most well-known and the first movement to emerge for the inclusion of women in society and politics. The struggle of courageous women and their friends happened between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. They pledged to make enjoying voting rights a reality. They struggled through and overcame the odds, and these became truly historic days; nations like New Zealand (1893), the United States (1920), and the United Kingdom (1928) became the first ones in the world to give the uniform suffrage base for all women citizens. Suffrage acted as the base for women to be part of the democratic process and further opened to door for the other women's issues of concern.

2. Legal Rights and Protections:
The legal waves of the suffrage movement were ridden by women from the next decades as they won more rights and protections before the courts. Iconic laws, for instance, the Civil Rights Act which was made in 1964, and is still running in the States of America, prohibited gender, color, race, religion, or national origin Also, the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1979 was a milestone for gender equality on an international scale, and it verified specific standards for women's rights and ensured their integration into all areas of life.

3. Reproductive Rights:
The battle around reproductive rights has been one of the most significant topics that moved the women's movement. A decision in Roe v. Wade (1973), upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States declared abortion legal, reinforcing female autonomy over their bodies and the right to make reproductive choices. In later years, advocates beyond the world have continued urging for access to contraception, comprehensive sex education the safe and legal abortion services with the point that reproductive rights are pivotal for the health, well-being, and economic emancipation of women.

4. Economic Empowerment:
Another key event in the direction of gender equality has been the economic equality of both sexes. It has been women who have the biggest gains in the job market, developing trailblazing paths and smashing the glass ceiling in traditionally male-dominated spheres. The momentum for equal pay has picked up, as countries pass legislation and active campaigns aimed at bridging the gender wage gap and guaranteeing women fair pay as compared to men who do similar jobs. Also, campaigns focusing on entrepreneurship, financial understanding, as well as access to capital have helped women to be self-sufficient and achieve financial security.

5. Representation and Leadership:
Ensuring a higher number of women in both actual occupations as well as in decision-making positions is among the most popular efforts of gender equality advocates. Women over the decades have made considerable progress in terms of political inclusion, with more women assuming leadership roles in governance, parliaments, and executive positions than in the past.
Looking Ahead:

These landmarks reflect quite appropriately that considering gender equality is an on-the-go journey, then there are challenges left. Though gender-based violence, unequal treatment, and obstacles are obstructions of women's complete involvement and progress in society, the plight has not been abated. COVID-19 has worsened the situation of already-existing inequalities, particularly impacting women and their unevenness regarding jobs, health services, and education.

On this occasion we are marking these achievements were made. However, we also have to renew our commitment to fight for gender equality unfinished business. Besides this, by living up for the equal rights of women, staying away from stereotyping, demolishing obstacles, and endeavoring to advocate for inclusivity and diversity, we can build an environment where men and women will thrive in unison.
