A category of mental health diseases known as personality disorders is characterized by persistent patterns of behavior, thought, and inner experience that dramatically diverges from societal norms. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists 10 distinct categories of personality disorders.
Here is a summary of the various categories of personality disorders:
1. Paranoid Personality Disorder: -
People with paranoid personality disorder have a propensity to be overly wary and distrustful of others. They may be wary, confrontational, and prone to altercations because they frequently mistakenly perceive good intentions for malice.
2. Schizoid Personality Disorder:-
Schizoid personality disorder patients have a pattern of social withdrawal. They choose alone pursuits, are frequently introverted, and show their emotions infrequently.
3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder:-
This disorder is characterized by quirky or strange behavior as well as difficulty establishing and sustaining close relationships. Schizotypal personality disorder patients may suffer odd perceptions or bizarre ideas.
4. Antisocial Personality Disorder:-
Those who have this condition consistently violate social rules and show disrespect for other people's rights. They frequently act impulsively, cunningly, and dishonestly and without empathy or regret.
5. Borderline Personality Disorder:-
Interpersonal interactions, one's self-image, and emotions are all prone to volatility in people with borderline personality disorder. Extreme self-harming tendencies, emotional instability, and profound fears of abandonment are all characteristics of people with borderline personality disorder.
6. Histrionic Personality Disorder:-
Attention-seeking behavior and a strong urge to be the center of attention are characteristics of people with histrionic personality disorder. They could be overly theatrical, emotionally vapid, and struggle to build real connections.
7. Narcissistic Personality Disorder: -
An excessive feeling of self-importance and an obsession with illusions of success, power, and beauty are symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder. They frequently lack compassion for others and demand overwhelming awe.
8. Avoidant Personality Disorder:-
The disease known as an avoidant personality disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of social constraint, inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to unfavorable criticism. Due to their fear of being rejected or criticized, people with an avoidant personality disorder may be socially isolated and hesitant to try new things or develop new relationships.
9. Dependent Personality Disorder:-
People with dependent personality disorder have an exaggerated need to be looked after by others. They could act clinging and submissive, struggle with making choices, and worry about being left alone.
10. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: -
Orderliness, perfectionism, and control are obsessions for people with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder patients may exhibit excessive rigidity, inflexibility, and difficulty delegating responsibilities to others.
It's important to note that personality disorders can vary in severity, and individuals may exhibit traits from multiple personality disorder types. A proper diagnosis and treatment plan should be determined by a qualified mental health professional.
