$25 Million Investment in AI by Microsoft

The CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadela announced “AI for accessibility” effort and also kicked off Microsoft’s annual conference for software developers. The company’s latest risk and effort is in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, internet connected devices and virtual reality.

Microsoft’s new offer and initiative to develop AI for people with disabilities is for a social cause and large market potential. Also, Microsoft is competing with Amazon and Google to provide internet connected services to businesses or organizations. Various issues regarding the privacy and ethical concerns have risen in the matter. Whereas Nadela is keeping in mind the danger of developing AI without compromising the ethics as ‘Privacy is a human right’. He said “We should be asking not only what computers can do, but what computers should do, that time has come.”

The Microsoft president said that this initiative is to accelerate the development of AI and to generate more employment. The five initiatives will include seed grants, academic researchers, non profit organizations and also way deeper investments and expertise from Microsoft researchers. In the interview Smith said “It may be an accessibility need relating to vision or deafness or to something like autism or dyslexia. There are about a billion people on the planet who have some kind of disability, either permanent or temporary.” Those people already have “huge potential,” but “technology can help them accomplish even more.”
