A Popular Word Game: Scrabble
Editorials News | Oct-07-2018
In this busy world, a game is needed to relax and it’s more fun when you can learn new words with it. Scrabble is a definitive board game that people around the globe enjoy playing, in which two to four players score points by placing tiles bearing a single letter onto a board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares.
The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns, and be included in a standard. Basically it is fun playing it on the physical board as feeling the smooth wooden tiles in your hand and luxuriates in the heavy fumes of cardboard, cheap wood and plastic as you rearrange the letters on your rack into the perfect word. It’s nearly impossible these days to have a game of Scrabble like that, because everyone is so busy and getting together in person is a constant challenge. Scrabble is known to enhance vocabulary and memory, often puts the best of friends, even families, against each other, but can also be addictive. The “Scrabble” name is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. company in the United States and Canada; whereas outside these two countries it is a trademark of Mattel company. This game is played in 121 countries and is available in 29 languages; approximately 150 million sets have been sold worldwide by these two registered companies and nearly one-third of American and half of British homes have a Scrabble set. It was introduced by Alfred Mosher Butts in 1948, and has been a family favorite for generations worldwide till recent times. It is not just a great vocabulary-expanding educational tool but it also enables lateral thinking. Playing online Scrabble is not as fun as battling it out in the physical scenario, it turns out to be obsession and addictiveness of its instant gratification. Nowadays one can play scrabble anytime with mood and time, because you can play anywhere you want—with as many people as you want. For the obsessed Scrabbler, it's a happiness earned, plus it keeps your word wits strong so that your in-person skills won't diminish over time. One can play Scrabble online as some famous and popular applications and websites are Facebook, Pogo, ISC, Worldwinner, Quadplex, etc. These popular platforms can be accessed from anywhere in the world. The basic advantages are that it has a dictionary in each game, so players can see if their words are actually words or not, which doesn't really matter since one can place fake words down on the board without it counting against any of the player.
