A Way to Extract Radioactivity from Water

A team of researchers at Rice University and Kazan Federal University, Russia have discovered a method to pull out radioactive elements from water. The scientists have added that their new discovery could purify the hundred million gallons of impure water stored after the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster.

The scientists also added that this effective oxidatively modified carbon (OMC) material is less costly. Additionally the newly found OMC is capable at extracting radioactive metal cations, as well as other elements such as cesium and strontium released into the environment after the Fukushima plant melted down.

The Fukushima plant was melted down because of an earthquake and tsunami happened in March 2011. As per the claim, OMC easily absorbs common radioactive elements found in water from oil extraction, such as uranium, thorium and radium. The project was done by lead author Rice chemist James Tour along with other scientist Ayrat Dimiev.
