The Olympics are an opportunity for citizens of the country across the world to assemble and cheer on their best athletes. They are held every 4 years in different countries. These games are divided into two categories as summer and the Winter Olympic Games. Let’s know some amazing facts about these games.
Olympics began as a religious ceremony
In ancient Greece, these games were part of a religious celebration to honor their supreme god Zeus. They were held in this way from 776 BC up to 393AD. When this practiced was stopped, Christianity had taken origin and recognized these games as a pagan celebration. For many years, the world remained without the Olympic Games. A French scholar known as Baron Pierre de Coubertin revived them.
Significance of Olympic Rings
The international symbol of the Olympic Games is a group of five interconnected rings. These rings represent the five major regions of the globe. Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceana are among them. Each ring has a distinct color. The colors are red, black, yellow, blue and green. Every national flag in the world has one of the colors in the Olympic rings. They symbolize global unity. These rings were designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1912.
No shoes are required
Lot of efforts is required to run a marathon. Athletes also need to have the right footwear so they can comfortably run for 26 miles .In 1960, the Olympic marathon winner was Abebe Bikila. He ran barefoot and Won a gold medal in the Rome Olympics. He was the first African ever to win a gold medal.
No clothes are allowed
In ancient Greece, athletes compete naked in the Olympics. But at that time only males were allowed to compete in the games and they had to do so wearing no clothes at all. They used to oil their bodies to honor the gods and to look more masculine.
The summer and the winter Olympics
The Olympic Games are divided into two parts as the summer and winter editions. The summer Olympics usually held during the warmer months of the year. On the other hand, the winter Olympics are held during winter. The summer games are held every leap year while the winter games are held every 2 years after a leap year.
The Olympic torch relay
The flame of Olympic is a major symbol of the games. The origin of torch comes from ancient Greece. According to legend; Prometheus stole fire from the Greek god ‘Zeus’. Thus, he was celebrated by lighting a torch and keeping it burning throughout the Olympic Games and still we are following this tradition.
