Can Babies Recognize Their Face Before 6 Months
Editorials News | Dec-28-2018
Babies do not recognize their faces before the 6 months and not even their mothers. They recognize their face through profile picture after 6 months of age.
According to the scientist at Chou University and other institutions have tested that 14 babies every month during 3 or 8 months of the life, first noticed the developmental changes in recognizing their face through their profile picture. Adults and teenagers are easily able to recognize their face through frontal and profile views whereas newborn babies are not able to recognize their face. They have measured the babies’ brain activity for recognizing their face from frontal and profile view through noninvasive near infrared spectroscopy.
Dr. Hiroko Ichikawa from Tokyo University of Science explains that babies’ brain activity tells us that if they recognize a face or not. They have found that hemodynamic responses to profile faces were weak at 3 months of age, increased during period from 3 to 8 months of age as compared with those of frontal faces but linear regression analysis states that the babies of 5.5 months of age, babies are able to recognize their face. Ryusuke Kakigi of the National Institute for Physiological Sciences elaborated the significance of the finding “Mobile phones become very popular, we are aware every moment of it”. Kakigi said that mothers caring for their babies are no exception. However, younger babies do not recognize the face in profile.
Senior Professor Masami K. Yamaguchi at Chuo University emphasize on the individual difference on the babies. It is normal that every child is different from each other and difference depends upon the time and speed of doing things. Yamaguchi said that they have successfully illustrated the difference between babies by a longitudinal study. However it brings us a significant achievement.
