CBSE Plans For an Education System Makeover
Editorials News | Oct-20-2018
The education system in India needs a serious makeover. Very few things have changed since the colonial times. Even great literary poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote about how the education system needs to change. Exams are times when students have sleepless nights. One of the major changes that need to be implemented is the need to change the preferred way of learning which is mostly memorizing. The parameter to judge the talent of a student seems to be percentage he/she gets in the board exam. To do that students are spoon fed and they mostly mug up lessons without proper understanding. There seems to be little or no practical knowledge, but just theoretical. It is really hard for the children as the education system and the social perception about education put unwanted burden on the student. They are forced to follow a pattern irrespective of their interest in the subject. We have established IITs and IIMs and students these day score 90% marks as a routine and even after scoring 90+ marks they are finding it difficult to get into colleges of their choice. Added to these is also the fact that in India education is construed as a means of climbing social and economic heights. The failure of Indian education system is because of intrinsic reasons. There are systemic faults, and even though the demand for good education and a market place for education do exist but the system never seem to have got a makeover.
Central Board of Secondary Education is now seriously contemplating making some very important changes in the way education in the schools are imparted, the patterns of exam, exams schedules etc.
The most criticized is the pattern of exam which from the year 2020 will be more analytical and problem solving, with emphasis on students fine tuning their critical thinking abilities and encouraging to think out of the box which will considerably reduce the necessity of memorizing without actually understanding the subject.
There are going to be changes in the exam and declaration of results schedules as well so that students both opting for domestic colleges and international colleges will not miss on the dates for enrolment. To achieve these there are plans to conduct the exams earlier in the month of March. There are also plans to bring about amendments and changes in the Central Board of Secondary Education Bylaws.
