CBSE Proposes Changes in English Paper of Class 12

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national level board of education in India for public and private schools, controlled and managed by Union Government of India. CBSE has asked all schools affiliated to follow only NCERT curriculum. Time and again CBSE keeps bringing about changes in the pattern of exams that it conducts. Recently, CBSE has launched a notification wherein it has highlighted about the changes that it has brought in the grade 12 English Core question paper. CBSE has precisely made modifications to the reading section of the English paper. These changes shall come into effect from session 2018 – 19. CBSE has quoted that it has taken the initiative to make these changes on the basis of the feedback received from the various stakeholders and subsequent deliberations in the meetings of Committee of Courses of the Board and the subject experts. The changes that have been made by CBSE are as follows:
1. Reading Passage – Presently two passages of 1100- 1200 words each are a part of the Reading section.
As per the new pattern, there shall be only 2 passages of 800- 900 words each.
2. Typology of Questions (for all the passages) – Presently, the no. of questions in the reading section are as follows: (i) 6-MCQs (1 mark each)
(ii) 16 Very short answer type questions including 1 on vocabulary for 1 mark
(iii) 1 short answer type question (3 marks)
(iv) 1 Long answer type question (5 marks)
As per the new pattern, there shall be the following number of questions:
(i) Passage No. 1 – (a) 5-MCQs (1 mark each)
(b) 9-Very short answer type questions including 3 questions on vocabulary
for 1 mark each
(c) 3-Short answer type question (2 marks each)
(ii) Passage No. 2 - 2 Long answer type questions (5 marks each)
3. Total no of Questions for Section A (for all the passages) – Presently, there are in total 24 questions of 30 marks in the reading section.
As per the new pattern, there shall be in total 19 questions of 30 marks.
4. Total no. of questions in the question paper – Presently there are 40 questions in the entire question paper of English.
As per the new pattern, there shall be a total of 35 questions.
These changes recommended by the CBSE will soon be implemented. Well it will definitely act as a relief for students who will have to attempt in all only 35 questions rather than 40 questions.
