Chandrayaan – 2: ISRO Try To Re-Connect With The Lander
Editorials News | Sep-23-2019
ISRO Chairman K. Sivan had said on 14th September, 2019 that the space agency would try to restore link with the lander for 14 days.
ISRO is not losing hope, the Indian Space Research Organization progress to make all-out efforts to inaugurate link with Chandrayaan-2's 'Vikram' lander, now take-off on the lunar surface after a hard-landing.
Vikram, with rover 'Pragyan' dwell inside it, hit the lunar surface after advisement with the ground-stations and loose its control during its final deep-off, just 2.1 km above the lunar surface, in the early hours of 14th September, 2019.
An ISRO official associated with the mission claimed on Monday that -
"It had a tough-landing very close to the estimated (touch-down) site as per the images sent by the on-board camera of the orbiter. The lander is there as a single piece on the moon, not busted into pieces. It is in a lurch position".
"We are making all the efforts and trying hard to see that how ISRO can re- establish the communication with the lander” the official said.
"An ISRO team is the on the job at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) here."
Chandrayaan-2 subsume an orbiter, lander (Vikram) and rover (Pragyan).
One Lunar day is equal to 14 earth days and the mission life of the lander and rover is designed according to this timeline of spacing.
ISRO Chairman K. Sivan had said on Saturday that the space agency of India would try to re-connect link with the Vikram Lander for 14 days, and retell the decree on 15th September, 2019 after the orbiter's camera spotted it out on the lunar surface.
An ISRO official said: "Unless and until every little thing is untouched (lander), it is very difficult to re-establish contact with the lander. Chances are less. Only if it had soft-landing, and if all systems functioning well, then only communication can be re-connect again. Things are stripped as of now."
"I will rate it restoring link as good" another senior official of the space agency said, exalting hope that lander startle to life again is not ruled out.
"But there are some cramps. We have experience of recovering spacecraft (which had lost contact) in geostationary orbit. But here in the case of Vikram lander, that kind of practical pliancy is not there. Already it is lying on the surface of the Moon, and we cannot modernize it. Critical thing is antennas will have to point out towards the ground station or the orbiter. Such transaction is remarkably difficult. At the same time, chances are good and we will have to keep our fingers crossed" the ISRO official said.
