Children Of Government Schools Harness Waste Power To Grow Veggies

Students from the Government Higher Primary School in Maruthinagar, near Sahakarnagar, are nurturing a very eco-friendly and healthy system on their premises which is worth emulating. They turn the waste of vegetable into manure and grow veggies in used plastic bottles.

Akash B and Jayalakshmi of 7th standard and Lakshmi VT of 6th standard started by collecting dry leaves strewn by the roadside around their school and put them into a pit which is 6-foot deep. They had dug up this pit on the campus. They later covered that pit using mud. In a week, the manure was ready. Simultaneously, they also cut out plastic water bottles by half and then, put manure inside them. Then, they sowed in them seeds of pudina, methi, coriander, curry leaves, spinach among others. Akash said that they wanted to grow organic vegetables which could be used in homes.

He added that they took more time to dig the pit than to collect leaves. But within a month, the manure was generated and they could use it for growing vegetables. Prakash Kumar, principal of the Mruthinagar GHPS said that students sold the produce to people in the neighborhood. The money which they had earned by doing this work was used for other projects of the school.

Jayalakshmi, a student of 7th standard said that when they got to know about the project, they were really excited. Their teachers were also very supportive and helped them a lot.

The project of students won Rs 50,000 at an innovation conclave which was held on March 6th. Last year, nearly 45 schools attended the meet and this time, 83 schools in total, including five government schools, took part.
