Citizen Science has Discovered New Form Of The Northern Lights

Working all together with some space researchers, Finnish amateur are the photographers who have discovered a new auroral form. Named as 'dunes' by the hobbyists, this phenomenon is also believed to be caused by the waves of oxygen atoms that were glowing due to a stream of particles released from the mighty Sun.
In the recent published study, the origins of the dunes were further tracked to a wave guide that was formed within the mesosphere and its boundary, the mesopause. The study has also posited that this new auroral form has provided researchers with a novel way for investigating conditions in the upper atmosphere.
The study was earlier published in the first issue of the journal AGU Advances.
An unknown fingerprint have appeared in the sky
Minna Palmroth who is Professor of Computational Space Physics at the University of Helsinki and who also heads a research group that has developed the world's most accurate simulation of the near-Earth spaces and space weathers that caused auroral emissions.
The sun also releases a steady flow of charged particles that are known as the solar wind. Reaching to the Earth's ionised upper atmosphere, the ionosphere, they have created auroral emissions by exciting atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen atoms. The excitation state is released as the auroral light.
In the late 2018, Palmroth had published a book entitled 'Revontulibongarin opas' that is a guide for aurora borealis watchers. The book was a result of Palmroth's cooperation with Northern Lights enthusiasts and the answers that were provided to questions about the physics of the phenomenon.
