Computer vision algorithm to mark Urban Changing Pattern

‘Google Street View’ images have become a frequently used tool. Computer vision algorithms have been used to examine millions of Google Street View images to measure whether and how urban areas are changing with time. The urban development depends on demographic characteristics like high density and high education. The key issue that is in the centre of this research is, why places evolve so much and how much change happens in different cities.

Till now Google has made a collection of millions of Street View Images from across the country as part of its mapping service. At the same time those maps are kept up-to-date by periodically re-photographing the same locations in major cities of world. This huge database can be used to getting the changes of cities with the time. Now, scientists are using artificial intelligence that involves artificial intelligence algorithm the collaborators are taught to view street scenes the same way as we do.

By using the computer algorithm they calculate street-change. When they notice a positive value of street-change, they associate it with new construction or upgrades at that place. At the same time a negative value is associated with overall decline in that area in terms of demography. Scientists have developed "invasion" theory, which suggests that areas around successful neighbourhoods tend to see greater improvement over time. It is found that capital and education, jobs and livelihoods of people impacts the patterns of urban change.
