Do You Know How Many Times Did US Land On The Moon?

The moment is recorded in the collective memory of an entire generation: the blurry black and white image of Neil Armstrong descending the stairs of the lunar module of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969 to become the first human being to tread the moon. "That is a small step for [a] man, a great leap for humanity."

But this first one was not the last for NASA. The United States will continue to complete six manned missions to the moon that will land a total of 12 astronauts (all men) from 1969 to 1972 in a series of Apollo missions that add up to Apollo 17. The only mission that cannot reach the Moon. The surface was Apollo 13, which suffered a critical failure of energy and oxygen in mid-flight and was forced to make a heroic emergency return.

Rod Pyle, the latest author of First on the Moon: The 50th Anniversary Experience of Apollo 11, the cultural and technological significance of Apollo 11 cannot be overstated, but the subsequent Apollo missions also deserve more attention.

For example, Apollo 12, which arrived on the Moon almost exactly four months after Apollo 11, was published the first landing of the space program. The lunar module of Apollo 11 narrowly prevented it from breaking on the moon rocks thanks to Armstrong's last-minute manual adjustments, but the result was an off-target arrival.

The commander of Apollo 12, Charles "Pete" Conrad, and the control of the mission actually consulted the landing of the second moon, which was programmed right next to the Surveyor 3 module, a NASA unmanned landing craft that had been on the moon since 1967.

"I remember seeing Apollo 14 as a child, and there are two men who fight for the cost of a small port on this wheeled equipment," says Pyle. "Suddenly, I'm seeing the General Hospital”, "That's how it was through Apollo 17, and yet, each of these missions will do something, more and more daring and fascinating."

Among the highlights of the subsequent missions is the debut of the "car of the moon", the first lunar vehicle. The light unit folded under the lunar lander, operated on electric power and had its own on-board navigation system that communicated directly with the control of the mission on Earth. The Apollo 15 astronauts traveled 17 miles across the lunar surface collecting rocks of different geological formations.

The main mission of the Apollo program, beyond the amazing achievement of landing the men on the moon and carrying out a house safely, was carried out an extensive scientific examination of the body closest to Earth. Apollo astronauts brought home hundreds of pounds of lunar rock, samples of drilled cores, measured seismic activity, collected atmospheric data from the almost-empty lunar environment, and measured the precise distance from Earth to the Moon.
