EARLY VISION INTERVENTIONS NECESSARY FOR ACAMEDIC PERFORMANCE
Editorials News | May-20-2017
Through a multidisciplinary study, researchers from the Queensland University of Technology have analyzed how vision can affect the ongoing learning of a child.
For assessing their vision quality, children were asked to perform a variety of near vision learning tasks like mathematics and reading. And for examining particular visual processing behaviors which underlie these activities, eye tracking was used.
They found that 30% of the 109 tested 7-year-old students had uncorrected eye problems which affected their scores in Spelling, Numeracy, Reading, and Grammar and Punctuation subtests.
Before starting school, children do not undergo any vision screening and investigation. So their vision and visual processing difficulties go undetected by parents till then.
"Children's eyes need to be tested early in primary school and throughout schooling to ensure they can fully engage with the visual aspects of classroom learning," says a researcher.
The research team has hypothesized that early vision interventions could aid the development of numeracy, literacy and subsequent classroom learning and accomplishment in children.
There are alleged reports of those schools involved in the study witnessing huge improvements, with certain children displaying greater classroom participation and a notable increase in their reading level.
