Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone, better known as Guru Dutt, was an Indian actor, producer and film director. He was born in Bangalore on 9 July 1925 to Vasanthi Padukone and Shivashanker Rao Padukone. His film career began in the year 1944 with a job at the Prabhat Film Company, Pune.
Over the years, he played the roles of an actor, a choreographer, and an assistant director. When he finally became a director, he produced Baazi which was an immediate success. Many films followed in the 1950s and 1960s.
He created the then classics like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pyaasa, and Chaudhvin Ka Chand. Specifically, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Pyaasa. The Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll, and the Time magazine's "All-TIME 100 best movies” have included these movies in their all-time greatest movies list. The former includes Dutt in the list of the greatest film directors of all time.
He is most renowned for producing artistic and lyrical films within the frame of famous Hindi cinema of the 1950s, and enlarging its commercial conventions, commencing with Pyaasa, his 1957 film. His movies go house-full when re-released; particularly in France, Japan and Germany.
