Government Schools to Get Biometric Attendance Systems in Coimbatore

Biometric attendance for teachers working in government schools will be implemented at a cost of `nine crores as per the Chief Minister's orders, Minister for school education Karnataka, Sengottaiyan said to a debate ensuring the quality of education provided in government schools in the demands for grants for his department.
That biometric attendance system was introduced in selected government schools in Perambalur district on a pilot basis. Secretary for school education Pradeep Yadav said the biometric system for teachers is to be implemented in high and higher secondary schools in the coming academic year, in his speech in the starting of 2018. Elementary and middle schools will have the facility from the successive academic year after its implementation in primary schools. As it is important to note that the new system will help ensure that teachers are regular to schools. Proxy attendance could be prevented. This scheme is claimed to be the first ever scheme of its type in the country. In the past the project was implemented in Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts on a pilot basis. A slew of measures to improve public libraries were also part of the announcements made by the minister. He said the Connemara library, Chennai, will be renovated with the air-conditioning facility so that the old buildings and rare books and documents could be protected. The allocation for the renovation works is `1.50 crore. With an outlay of an equal amount of money, three libraries in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Tirupur were converted into model libraries with all modern facilities for readers. A special section with several features for the visually impaired was created in all district libraries at a cost of `96 lakh. Wi-Fi will be established in certain libraries in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Coimbatore in order to attract more readers. Currently an official said they were in the process of short-listing the 60 schools in Coimbatore. They had not segregated schools as high schools or higher secondary schools for the purpose, but only those with the required facilities. The state had recently said in an order that a total of 7,728 government and government-aided schools would get the biometric attendance system for teachers. Of these, 3,688 are high schools and 4,040 are higher secondary schools.
