Humility: The best thing in a human

The feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others or having a lack of pride is defined as Humility. Our culture teaches us values on external accomplishments, appearance, and self-aggrandizement, all these things are ephemeral at best that even a small display of this quiet virtue can make one feel like a drowning man coming out for air.

Still, most of us find it challenging to express humility? It is because we often misinterpret it as a sign of weakness when in actuality it is an indication of tremendous inner strength. In fact, it is one of the most powerful and important attributes of growth.

Being humble or developing a feeling of humility helps an individual to build trust and facilitates learning, which are key aspects of leadership and personal development. Truly humble people show acts of kindness to society and freely offer their helping hand because they see and accept their own strengths and limitations without defensiveness or judgment.

Tips for cultivating humility

  1. Embrace your humanness: Due to some job or relationship issues, our self-esteem plummets because we tied our self-worth to those things. Now suddenly, we become bad and unworthy, Moreover, it could be a long road to recovery. But, Not so for people with humility. Their ability to withstand failure or criticism comes from their sense of intrinsic value rather than outer means. So when they fail at a particular task or don’t live up to expectations, it doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with them. It just means that they are normal humans like the rest of us.
  2. Practice mindfulness and self-compassion: Mindfulness and Self-compassion have been linked to greater psychological resilience and emotional well-being. Humble people have an accurate picture of themselves. They are aware of their faults and gifts which helps them to see what might need changing within. Mindfulness grows our self-awareness
  3. Express gratitude: If you say "Thank You", that means we recognize the gifts that come into our lives and, as a result, acknowledge the value of other people. Gratitude can make us more focused on those around us. Gratitude and Humility are mutually reinforcing.

Perhaps the key to humility is viewing life as a journey towards cultivating these qualities that bring out the best in ourselves and others and make this world a better place.
