Indian Parents Work Overtime for Children's Education

Indian Parents Work Overtime for Children's Education

According to World Economic Forum the Indian parents top the list with maximum amount of time spent helping their children with their homework or studies. It was found that almost 62 percent of Indian parents on an average spend nearly 12 hours a week to help their children. This trend is not without a reason, there are limited seats available in the universities and there an increasing young population which has only led to increase in competition which in turn results in peer pressure rising among children.

Thus brings us to how much Indian parents are paying towards their child's education. Given the fact that government run schools do not have adequate infrastructure, low Pupil teacher ratio forces parents to opt for private institutions. These private schools are quite ubiquitous in both the urban and rural areas and some of them are downright expensive.

A research conducted by HSBC in its report said that the cost of higher education of the child comes with the sacrifice of not just both the parents working, but reducing their leisure activities like going for movies or eating out or enjoying a holiday. It does not end here they also work extra hours or a second job to fund their child's education.

The tuition fee is only one part of the total expense. If a child is studying abroad his/her travelling expenses alone are high. The parents not just provide the money for fees but lifestyle costs as well. A study also says that Indian students tend to spend more on clothes and make-up than they do on books during the entire course of the degree.
