Inspiration of New Solar Cell Design from Insect Eyes

Scientists have devised new ways of developing perovskite photovoltaics. They have got the idea of packing the tiny solar cells together just like the micro-lenses in the compound eyes of an insect. This has actually removed a major obstacle in the development of perovskite photovoltaics. The Scientists from Stanford University said that it has created a path for a new generation of advanced photovoltaics.

The new study by scientists used the insect – inspired design to save the fragile photovoltaic material called perovskite from external stresses. The stresses could be deterioration when cells are exposed to heat, moisture or any other kind of mechanical stresses. The results of this study are published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science (E & ES). Reinhold Dauskardt who is a professor of materials science and engineering and senior author of this study said that Perovskites are an extremely promising material. These are low-cost materials that can convert sunlight to electricity. These are as efficient as conventional solar cells made of silicon.
