ISRO YUVIKA 2019: Students Request More Participants For The Young Scientists Program

The ISRO YUVIKA 2019 list of provisionally selected students was announced last week, and 105 names have been announced for the Young Scientists Program

The list of shortlisted students of ISRO YUVIKA 2019 has been announced by the Indian Space Research Organization. As ISRO had previously committed, 3 students from each state and union territory have been selected for the Young Scientist Program or 'YUva VIgyani KAryakram' (YUVIKA 2019) to be held the second week of May of this year.

Although, a total of 105 students have been provisionally selected, thousands of other anxious and enthusiastic students who had requested YUVIKA 2019 and unfortunately were not selected seem to be disappointed. Several students and parents wrote to DataQuest about how ISRO should consider taking more participants for the Young Scientist Program. Some students even suggested that ISRO must take an exam for all students who apply and then decide on admission. "You can take tests for the students who applied and then select around 100 members from each state. Selecting 3 members from each state is wrong, "says Sanapala Santosh Kumar echoing the thoughts of other students.” I do not like this plan that all the students cannot participate in. Jai hindi, Jai bharat, all the best winners," says Krish Sood. "We have already sent the details of our children to your program, he is very interested in this program, please check your information once, your consideration gives you a really bright future, thanking you for your kind concern," says a hopeful father to ISRO.

Some students at the school also feel that more students should have been selected from the CBSE board. "I'm seeing that all the results and almost all the students are from government schools and not from CBSE, this is very disappointing," says Kunthavi. However, the ISRO president, K Sivan, has acknowledged the fact that, according to the requests received for YUVIKA 2019, the response to the agency's student outreach program was "immense" and that they were considering carrying out this initiative every year, according to media reports. The selected students could visit the ISRO laboratories as part of the two-week program. If the timing is right, students could actually witness the rocket launch live, says Mr. Sivan.

The Young Scientist Program will be held over two weeks at four ISRO centers, namely, the URSC in Bangalore, VSSC and the Space Applications Center in Ahmadabad during the second half of May 2019. The program will include invited talks, shared experiences scientific experts, visits to facilities and laboratories, exclusive sessions for discussions with experts, practical sessions and feedback, says ISRO on its website.
